50' Tucker Tow Boat 1975 MARY B

Mary B Collides with Delta Queen

Stories from the Delta Queen
BY JOHN JOHNSTON | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
The story has circulated for years: The ghost of Capt. Mary B. Greene haunts the Delta Queen.

"Ma" Greene, as she was known, was the wife of Delta Queen Steamboat Co. founder Gordon C. Greene. She piloted riverboats for 55 years, and died on board the Delta Queen in 1949 at age 81.

Legend holds that Ma Greene would not allow alcohol to be sold on the family's boats, so it wasn't until after her death that a bar was built on the Delta Queen. Some time later, the story goes, a runaway towboat collided with the steamboat and wrecked the bar. The name of the towboat: Mary B.

65' Tucker Riverboat 1988 QUEEN CITY CLIPPER

On August 10, 2005 I met with Captain Dennis New of Queen City Riverboats. He thought Jess Tucker was one of the greatest men he'd ever met. "Amazing". The Queen City Clipper has been in every Tall Stacks Festival in Cincinnati. It has served the purpose of ferrying people and supplies to large Stern-wheelers, such as the General Jackson.

The Queen City Clipper is a passenger barge. It has no means of propulsion, so it is pushed on the river by a towboat. It has all the comforts of a large restaurant. This barge is the sister-ship to the Celebration Queen and The Jubilee Queen.

In 1988 during its maiden voyage, the Clipper was passed by two fast moving Carvers. The Carvers threw such a wake that the cables connecting her to her towboat snapped. The Queen City Clipper spun out of control and hit some island in the Ohio River. It caused a dent she carries to this day.

I have a pamphlet from Queen City Cruises that I need to scan to be able to post a good picture of the boat.

Columbia has been for sale on ebay. I don't know how long ebay's listings are available,
but there are wonderful pictures and descriptions of this great boat. Also, notice how foolish the bids were. Don't those folks know what "Tucker Boat" means?

There is also a very classy ad for the boat at: www.columbiasternwheeler.com

Coast Guard Monitors Spill In Big Bend Channel

TAMPA, Fla. - The Coast Guard received a call at about 9:30 a.m. today from Terry Milligan, a representative from Oscar Renda Contracting, stating that a 27-foot harbor tug from their company sank and was discharging fuel into Big Bend Channel, north of Apollo Beach, Fla.

A crew from Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg arrived on scene at about 11:30 a.m. today to assess the situation and discovered that a mixture of about 200-gallons of oil and diesel fuel had escaped from the sunken tug Marilyn K. McFarland.

Oscar Renda Contracting quickly contained the spill and hired Southern Waste Services (SWS) to clean it up.

The incident is under investigation by Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg's Marine Casualty Investigator. No wildlife have been affected by the spill.

Respondent Troy C. Drury began work as a deckhand for Upper River Services (URS) in 1991. He was a crewmember of one of URS's river harbor boats, the M/V Mary J, when he sustained a back injury while jerking wire from an allegedly defective rigging wire that he was using to couple two barges together.
At the time of Drury's alleged injury, he was working by himself because the mate, Thomas Warnock, was hung over and was either unwilling or unable to assist Drury. Drury had to use the portable rigging rather than the stationary rigging to couple the barges because the stationary rigging was kinked or snarled and was not fit for use.
Portable rigging involves the use of a heavy, 35-foot-long rigging wire and a heavy ratchet. The wire is laid around deckfittings and the slack is then jerked from the wire. Drury testified that he sustained his injury while jerking on the wire, which failed to yield the anticipated amount of slack. He testified that the reason was that the wire must have had a kink in it. On cross-examination, however, he testified that he did not see any kink in the wire while he laid it.
Pursuant to a special verdict, the jury found, among other things, that (1) Upper River Services was negligent and its negligence played a part in causing Drury's injuries, and (2) the M/V Mary J was unseaworthy and its unseaworthiness was a substantial cause of Drury's injuries.
The trial court subsequently granted Upper River Service's motion for judgment notwithstanding the verdict regarding Drury's negligence claim, but denied the motion regarding Drury's claim for unseaworthiness. Upper River Services appeals that portion of the order denying its motion. If necessary, Drury challenges that portion of the order granting URS's motion.

Showboat Majestic Hull 1968 or 1969

Showboat Majestic
Cincinnati, OH
The MAJESTIC ist the last active historic showboat on the rivers. Built in 1923 the MAJESTIC and the sternwheel toawboat ATTABOY were sold to the Indiana University in 1959 and travelled along the Ohio River until 1965 when the Coast Guard decided that the wooden hull was too decrepit for travel. The boats were tied up at Jeffersonville, IN, where shows continued to be presented on th epermanentely moored vessel until it was sold to Cincinnati in 1967, where the MAJESTIC is still being used as an old-time showboat today.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it was 1968 or '69 when the MAJESTIC got her new steel hull at Tucker Marine. It didn't come any too soon, as that old wooden hull, dating from 1923, was decrepit. Capt. Roddy Hammett said that someone came running over to the DQ one night and asked if they could borrow a bilge pump because the showboat was sinking! Roddy explained that everything on the DQ was steam, but he went over to see what he could do. He saw several actors down in the hold, frantically bailing water. Help came from somewhere and the MAJESTIC was saved, but the new owners knew they were living on borrowed time and the new steel hull was installed soon thereafter

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was 1970 when the new steel hull was placed under the old wooden hull.Original hull dimensions were 120'L x 29'W. New hull size was 135'L x 40'W.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S&D attendees viewed a clip showing the present MAJESTIC showboat here being floated in her new steel hull down at TUCKER MARINE on Kellogg Ave. [*Cap'n Bill Judd may remember the year it was done.] I saw the hull being welded but not the 'float in' of the boat itself. It was a miserably cold day with snow when the two were matched. I'd dare risk an opinion that showboats as we know them are a totally American phenomenon and creation.

45' Tucker Houseboat 1968

This Tucker Houseboat was sold by Washington Marine last year.

"Tucker boats were built by a custom yard located in Cincinnati. The yard specilized in both commercial and pleasure crafts. This vessel has the 3 rail handrail system with spring loaded gates versus simple chains on the walkways. Hulls were custom built for each vessel hence the walkways are part of the hull, not just bolt-ons. The bridge was revised by Tucker in the late 1980's to enlarge the enclosed area. Three captain-type chairs where installed on the bridge and hydraulic steering was installed. A swim platform was added which also serves as a auxiliary 250 gallon fuel tank giving the boat a potential 650 gallon fuel capacity. New water tanks were installed in the late 1990's with 140 gallon capacity. In 2001 the boat was put in the yard taken down to the base aluminum and repainted with imron which was wet sanded and rubbed out for a spectacular finish. In 2002 all new deck hardware and navigation lites were installed and two remote controlled spotlights were installed to add to the 1000 watt carlysle Finch spotlight which can be operated from either station. A new custom stereo/amplifier/speaker system was also installed on the bridge. The bridge bimini and full enclosure was also replaced at that time. Power is supplied by twin cummins 175hp engines with approximately 2100 original hours. Also in 2002 both starters and one alternator were installed and dripless packing was installed on the shafts. The boat has Kahlenberg air horns, a 12KW Onan genset, 2 zone Cruiseair Ac/Rc heat, wood parquet floors in the galley and head and all new faucets in the head and galley. The galley is equipped with a double stainless steel sink, disposal, 3 burner electric range and oven. There is also a microwave and standard size self defrosting refrigerator. The head has a stand-alone shower, crown head, vanitory and both the head and galley have new commercial size exhaust fans. The head also has a thermostatically controlled built-in electric heater. The boat is being offered for sale as the owners want to stay in Florida permenantly. "

Tucker Towboat 1966 BEVERLY-WAYNE

http://greatercincinnatimarinellc.com/about.html
“Whatever it Takes” is a promise to our customers of quality services: Rental, Transportation, & Loading/Unloading of Cargo.Greater Cincinnati Marine was founded by Griffin Carlisle in 1966. The story as told by Griff was: He needed a tugboat and crane flat to move one of his cranes to a job on the Ohio River. He called a local marine operator and was told the equipment would be there at 7:00am the following Monday, as he requested. Well, Monday arrived and there wasn't a boat or barge in sight. Griff called and was told they were busy and would be there the following day. This went on for four days and on the fifth day when they still hadn’t arrived, Griff went to Tucker Marine Builders in Cincinnati and had a boat built. He told Tucker “if you can’t get a boat for five days this must be a great business, and I need to be in it." He named the boat the Beverly Wayne after his children.
Griff turned Carlisle Crane, Excavation and Construction Companies over to his son Wayne in the mid-fifties. With Wayne's dynamic personality, his ability to work with his employees and his customers, the Companies grew with branches opening in Dayton, Orlando, Louisville and Indianapolis. Wayne used the "Whatever It Takes to Get It Done" phrase so much in everyday business that it became the company slogan. This is a phrase he still lives by to this day.
With Wayne running the Carlisle Companies, Griff devoted his time to the River Business, working 15 to 17 hours each day. He never missed a day’s work until a few days before his death in 2000.

1960 Houseboat 35' Sand Pebbles

Tue 8/29/2006
Lynn,

Here is a brief history of my boat. Built in 1960, steel hull. Designed by a gentleman in Cincinnati named Fehl. Mr. Fehl's daughter acquired the boat after his death and owned it for 25 years give or take. Her name was Pat Fehl. My father bought the boat from her in 1986, and joined the Ohio River Launch Club, located on the Ohio near downtown Cincy.. My father died of a heart attack in 1988. I inherited the boat and the coupon book !!. I too joined the Ohio River Launch Club, and the boat has been there ever since. My Dad named it Sand Pebbles because he loved that movie. ( Steve McQueen ). It has been a party boat enjoyed by many many friends of mine. It actually survive a barge hit about 10 years ago. It was docked at the marina and a barge lost power, causing a chain reaction of hitting my boat and two others, causing major damage. But the old Tucker survived. I really enjoy it, but as it gets older, I don't take it out very much.
The generator is a 1 KW Kohler, it has 2 Chrysler flat-head 6 engines, and I still use the original refrigerator !!
I loved your website and will keep reading more from it. Expect a photo in a few days and many thanks again.
